The NU Club of Philadelphia -- 2007 Club of the Year – honored Make a Difference Day by cleaning and landscaping the Royal Gardens in Morris Park, a vast public greenspace and recreational area in an underserved section of the city. For three hours, approximately 15 alums, spouses and children picked up trash, cleared branches, laid mulch and beautified a playground overgrown with foliage. NU volunteers were so efficient, they shocked park staff with the amount of work they were able to complete, enabling staff to assign more projects to volunteers than had been expected. After the cleanup, NU volunteers enjoyed a picnic in the park.
October was an event-filled month for the NU Club of Philadelphia, as the previous weekend a dozen alums and their families attended a Saturday night concert performed by Symphony in C, a professional symphony located in the Philadelphia suburb of Camden, NJ. The concert, which consisted of works by Mozart, Stravinsky, and others, was held at the state-of-the-art Center for the Performing Arts at Rutgers University -- Camden. Before the concert, alums shared a dinner at a nearby waterfront restaurant and followed the concert with a catered reception sponsored by the Symphony. Alums were also able to chat with Chris Van Bergen, an NU alum and the principle trumpet player for the symphony.
