Internationally-renowned soprano Constance Hauman (Mu83) came to Northwestern on the recommendation of a family friend. Years after she graduated, that family friend once again factored into the trajectory of Hauman's career—as did famed alumnus Gary Marshall (J56). Hauman shares the story of landing a leading role in Marshall’s directorial debut on the operatic stage, and how the Northwestern bond (not to mention her ability to lisp) helped seal the deal.

In recognition of her distinguished career, Hauman received an Alumni Merit Award from the NAA at the 2008 Alumni Awards in Chicago.
