NEXT Student FAQ

Why should I participate in NEXT?

An externship is a great way to learn about the daily work life of a professional in your field of interest. You'll have the chance to "test" a career, learn about relevant issues in the workplace, and establish a contact with a potential career mentor. It may provide an advantage in applying for subsequent internship programs or employment. You will also acquire another accomplishment of note for your professional resume.

What will I do as an extern?

Every externship is different, and the exact agenda for your day will depend on your host, your host's position and field, and your own interests. You may, for example, take a company tour; sit in on meetings; assist with projects; or have the opportunity to ask members of staff questions about the field, the organization, and the best path to becoming a professional.

When do externships take place?

NEXT 2008 externships will take place between March 21-April 21, on a day mutually agreed upon by each host/extern pair.

For how many externships may I apply?

Each student can apply for up to five externship opportunities, with the understanding that you must agree to be in the location in which your externship takes place, on the date upon which you and your NEXT host agree. For complete details about the application and matching process, see How NEXT Works.

How many externships may I do?

You may participate in one NEXT externship per academic year.

If I apply, am I guaranteed an externship?

Although externship assignments are not guaranteed, all Northwestern undergraduate students are encouraged to apply. Participation depends upon the availability of the host of your choice, and the host's ranking of your application. (For more about the selection process, see below.)

How does the selection process work?

Following the close of the student application period (for application details, see How NEXT Works), alumni hosts will receive the applications of all students who expressed an interest in them. The host will select the top five applications from among those submitted, and NAA will then match externs with hosts. Matching is done on a first-come, first-served basis; the first hosts to return their preferences receive first pick of the pool of students.

Do NEXT externs receive payment, reimbursement, or academic credit?

No. Externships are unpaid and ineligible for academic credit. You are responsible for all related transportation, housing, meals, and other costs as necessary.

Should I consider my host to be a potential employer?

Keep in mind that the NEXT program is not about getting a job or internship as a direct result of your externship. It is permissible, however, to inquire of your host about internship opportunities the organization may offer. If your sponsor asks for your resume and/or inquires about your internship or job plans after graduation, feel free to share such information.

What happens if I am not matched?

If you are not matched with an externship host, there are still many opportunities for you to receive career guidance, alumni advice, networking opportunities, internships and to attend various career workshops through the Northwestern Alumni Association at www.alumni.northwestern.edu/students and University Career Services at www.northwestern.edu/careers/.
