Eat Dinner with 12 Strangers, Leave with 12 New Friends (2009)

Dinner with 12 Strangers, an annual event co-sponsored by the NAA and Northwestern Class Alliance (NCA), has been successful in uniting Northwestern students, faculty, and alumni for the past five years. The popularity of the event reached a new high in 2009, with 26 dinners scheduled and more that 225 NU undergraduate participating. There was even a wait list of 200 students.

Lauren Herpe, NAA Career Services, Students and Young Alumni Coordinator, organized Dinner with 12 Strangers and described the impressive response rate in a recent interview with the Daily Northwestern.

Alumni hosts excitedly participated and were able to connect with current students by sharing memories of their Wildcat past. Students enjoyed a home-cooked meal and gained insight into the present careers of alumni.

One dinner hosted by Ed and Marta Pappert (WCAS68) offered students and alumni great opportunties to share enlighting stories over homemade gingerbread cookies and apple cider. The Papperts, having met their freshman year at NU, ere married shortly after graduation. Most stories revolved around football games, dating on campus, and evolving NU traditions.

Dinner with 12 Strangers is an important annual event which continues to strengthen the multigenerational NU family. One Weinberg sophomore noted, “One day I hope to host a Dinner with 12 Strangers and help continue this tradition.”
