A Night to Remember in New York

On Monday, March 31, more than 640 people attended the Northwestern Alumni Association’s “A Night With Northwestern in NY: Expect the Unexpected,” surpassing attendance in 2006 and making it the highest attended Northwestern event ever in New York! This one-night-only Broadway performance featured many of Northwestern University’s acclaimed stars of stage and screen.

The evening began with a welcome reception at the Millennium Broadway Hotel hosted by Northwestern University President Henry S. Bienen. (View a photo gallery of the welcome reception)

At the historic Hudson Theatre in mid-town Manhattan, the main attraction featured performances and appearances by actors Richard Kind (C78), Brian d’Arcy James (C90), Sally Murphy (GMu84), Mary Beth Peil (Mu62), Kate Shindle (C99), Stephanie D’Abruzzo (C93), Fred Applegate (C77), Jenny Powers (Mu03), Lily Rabe (C04), Mamie Gummer (C05), Matt Sax (C06), and many more!

Directors Michael Greif (C81); Daniel Goldstein (C97), Jeff Calhoun, and Mark Hoebee (C82) also participated in the program.

The audience enjoyed video segments by actor Craig Bierko (C86) with writer/producer Eric Gilliland (C84), as well as from the comedic team Billy Eichner (C00) and Ben Salka (C99) of Creation Nation. And Northwestern’s School of Communication Dean Barbara O’Keefe and Music Theatre Professor Dominic Missimi amade appearances.

The evening ended with an unexpected, surprise performance by Tony Award-winning actress and Grammy nominee Heather Headley (C97), who brought down the house with a powerful rendering of “Mine” from The Legend of Stagecoach Mary, a new musical developed by alumni Curtis Moore (Mu95) and Thomas Mizer (C93).  (View performance photos from Expect the Unexpected).

Additional musical numbers featured in the program were written or composed by Joseph Thalken (Mu84), Dan Lipton (Mu97), Larry Grossman (C60), Eli Bolin (C00), Michael Mahler (C04) and Alan Schmuckler (C05).

The event was directed by Jen Bender (C01) and produced by Kenneth Ferrone (C04) and Erica Lynn Schwartz (C03). Additional members of the artistic team included choreographer Jessica Redish (C02) and music director Brad Haak (Mu98)
