A Beautiful Night of Theatre

Nearly 100 alumni and friends of Northwestern gathered at Barber Theatre on the Evanston campus to attend the July 31 world premiere of Dangerous Beauty, an American Music Theatre Project (AMTP) production and the latest NAA Chicago Theatre Event.

Dangerous Beauty, inspired by historical events, tells the tumultuous tale of Veronica Franco, a notorious 16th-century poet who recognizes that only as a courtesan can she obtain access to an education and a place in the cultural and political life of Venice.

Featuring students, alumni, and faculty in the cast and creative team, this production was a showcase of much NU talent. Ornate costumes designed by School of Communication professor emeritus Virgil Johnson (GC67) and a beautiful set designed by alumna Collette Pollard (GC06) were among the products of this skilled group.

Following the show, guests were treated to an exclusive discussion of the project with AMTP artistic director Stuart Oken, composer Michele Brourman (Mu67), book and verse author Jeannine Dominy, lyricist Amanda McBroom, and actress Jenny Powers (Mu03), who portrayed Veronica Franco.
This event was co-sponsored by the Northwestern Alumni Association, the NU Club of Chicago, and the Northwestern University Gay and Lesbian Alumni (NUGALA).
