Theatre Professors Take Home Tonys

During a June 19 reception at the Evanston campus’ McCormick Tribune Center, the School of Communication and the Northwestern Alumni Association formally honored their 2008 faculty Tony Awards recipients.

Days earlier in New York, Anna Shapiro and Todd Rosenthal, both professors in the School of Communication, had been presented with Tony Awards for their work on Tracy Letts’ drama, August: Osage County. Shapiro won for Best Direction of a Play, and Rosenthal took home Best Scenic Design of a Play.

After guests – including faculty, administrators, students, and alums – mixed and mingled, School of Communication Dean Barbara O’Keefe toasted the recipients. Shapiro and Rosenthal were joined by Ana Kuzmanic (GC04), assistant professor of theatre at Northwestern, who collaborated on costume design for August: Osage County. The three discussed their experiences working together on the play and fielded questions from guests.

Northwestern University President Henry S. Bienen concluded the short program by expressing his congratulations and commenting on the significance of these awards.

August: Osage County continues its Broadway run this summer and will begin a national tour in San Francisco in August 2009, with a stop expected in Chicago.
