NU Club of Virginia - Grand Opening: Taubman Museum of Art

Date:
Nov 15 2008

Join us Saturday, Nov. 15, in Roanoke for the Virginia alumni club's 2008 holiday gathering.

We'll tour the brand-new Taubman Museum of Art, then gather for a reception at a nearby downtown restaurant.

The museum, which opens to the public in its new home Nov. 8, will house a collection that focuses on American art and includes works by Winslow Homer, John H. Twachtman, Childe Hassam, John Singer Sargent and Thomas Eakins.

But the building itself is worth the trip. Designed by Randall Stout, the $66 million museum is a new focal point in historic downtown Roanoke. The structure, with its exterior of steel, zinc, glass and stone, has dramatically changed the downtown skyline – and has drawn both rave reviews and scathing criticism.

While you're in Roanoke, make sure to leave time to explore the rest of the city, including the downtown market area, with its art galleries, restaurants, gift shops and more. Other cultural highlights in downtown Roanoke include the O. Winston Link Museum, which houses a significant collection of Link's railroad photos; the Virginia Transportation Museum, with its collection of locomotives; and the Science Museum of Western Virginia, with lots of hands-on exhibits for kids.

We've reserved a block of rooms at the Courtyard by Marriott Roanoke Airport for both Friday and Saturday nights at $99/night before taxes. To reserve a room, call the hotel directly at (540) 563-5002 and reference the Northwestern Alumni group. Please note that this rate comes with a 72-hour cancellation policy. The room block will be held until Oct. 15.

We'll gather at the museum at 1 p.m. Saturday. The reception, which will feature heavy hors d'oeuvres, will start at 5 p.m.

The cost includes admission to the museum and the reception (cash bar). Members - $27.50, Non-Members - $32.50, Children 17 and under - $15.00 ($5 early bird discount through 11/8.)
