NU Club of the Twin Cities Hosts John Huston
Join the NU Club of the Twin Cities and Northwestern Alumni Association for:
North Pole ’09: Challenge, Climate Change and Choice
In March of 2009, John Huston (WCAS99), and his expedition partner, Tyler Fish, will attempt to become the first Americans to ski unsupported to the North Pole. Due to the rapidly melting sea ice of the Arctic Ocean, this 55-day, 475-mile expedition may not be possible in 10 years. Huston and Fish approach this immense challenge with optimism, humility and responsible action. This digital multimedia presentation will focus on the quest for the North Pole and how the team's deliberate approach to this challenge can be applied to larger contexts. John will also discuss how our society's energy choices are dramatically impacting the Arctic. View stunning photographs, and hear stories from Huston's 72-day expedition on Greenland in 2005 and his 57-day expedition to the South Pole last winter.
Date: Tuesday, December 9
Time: 6:30-7:00: Check-in and socializing
7:00-8:30: Presentation and Q&A
Location: Neighborhood House, 179 Robie Street East, Saint Paul, MN 55107
Appetizers and refreshments will be served.
About the speaker:
John Huston is a wilderness and arctic expeditioner, experiential educator, writer, world traveler, cross-country ski racer and fledgling historian. His most recent expedition was a 57-day, 720-mile ski trip to the South Pole. He has worked as expedition manager for the One World Expedition, the first expedition to reach the North Pole. Prior to that, he worked as a wilderness expedition instructor for Outward Bound Wilderness in Ely, Minnesota for six years. During that time he slept outside 200 nights a year, led expeditions in all seasons, developed educational curricula and read about polar exploration history as much as possible.
