NU Club of Rockford -- Make A Difference Day at Hoo Haven (2009)

Date:
Oct 18 2009

The NU Club of Rockford will join other members of Northwestern's family for Make a Difference Day, a national community service program in which Northwestern students participate every fall. The program unites the Northwestern community and sends groups of student volunteers into the local Evanston and Chicago neighborhoods to participate in various hands-on volunteer opportunities.

Rockford area alums will meet at Hoo Haven Wildlife Rescue Center at 12:30pm for a tour and a project. After spending time at Hoo Haven, the Club will go to nearby Rockton for an early casual dinner at Fibs Restaurant.

RSVP by Wednesday, October 14, to Dick Nielsen at (815) 335-2784 or nielsen4149@gmail.com.

Event Details

Perform a valuable community service while having some fun at the same time.

This year, Northwestern is reaching out to local and national clubs and asking them get involved in their own area, on the same day that Make A Difference Day will take place in the Chicagoland area; this is also the kick-off to Homecoming Week.

Each club can choose its own community service project that is relevant to its own area and will be fun for alumni to participate in. The club that has the most community service hours for the Make A Difference Day activities will receive a special treat from the NAA and will be highlighted on the NAA web site.

The Club’s event will involve meeting many species of rescued animals--we will help Hoo Haven by working on their buildings or grounds. This will be a great event for children, so plan to bring them along. Wear comfortable work clothes (they will be fine for dinner) and bring work gloves.

Hoo Haven is located at 10823 Cleveland Road, Durand, IL 61024. Cleveland Road goes south off Highway 75 just west of the town of Harrison. Hoo Haven is less than a mile south of Hwy 75 on the east (left) side of Cleveland Road.

HOO HAVEN MISSION STATEMENT

“Hoo” Haven is dedicated to rehabilitating and releasing, sick, injured and orphaned, North American Wildlife. And to educating individuals to the importance of the conservation of Mother Earth, to maintain the land, clean and beautiful for all.

A quick review of what “Hoo” Haven is ALL ABOUT for those who may be reading this for the first time. “Hoo” is a facility, where North American Animals and birds are brought, when they are orphaned or injured. They are given individual treatment to get them back to health and then put back in the wild where they belong.

We have a small ICU, where nebulizer treatments, Oxygen, IVs. Steroids etc are given to stabilize them. When all is well they are put on their individual diets and any medicines needed to complete their recovery. Broken bones are immobilized before transport to our vet.

We are open to the public by appointment ONLY. We are mainly a hospital and step down unit, for the animal and birds to receive their care before release. However, if you would like to do a project, donate or help in some way a private tour may be arranged for you
