Across the country, between March 23 and April 23, 2009, students may participate in the sixth-annual Northwestern Externship Program (NEXT). NEXT is a one-day job shadowing program that offers undergraduate students the opportunity to accompany alumni at their place of employment in order to learn about a specific field.

Student registration opens
How NEXT Works
1. In December, interested alumni sign up online as NEXT Alumni Hosts.
2. Hosts' anonymous descriptions will be posted on the NAA Web site with an assigned reply code for students to browse in January. Students will submit letters of interest and their resume to the NAA at this time.
3. In February, Hosts whose profiles have drawn interest from students will receive an e-mail from the NAA containing submissions from students who are interested in that particular field.
4. Alumni Hosts will review the student submissions and resumes and submit their top five choices to the NAA.
5. The NAA will match hosts and students and notify all parties of their matches by the end of February. The student will contact his/her Host in late February/early March to set up a date for the job shadowing to take place.
NEXT Key Dates
January 12–23, 2009
Student application period. Applications due by 5:00 p.m. on January 23.
February 4–11, 2009
Hosts evaluate and rank student applications. Rankings due back to NEXT coordinator by 5:00 p.m. CST on February 11th.
February 23–27, 2009
Externship matches announced via e-mail from NAA.
March 2–13, 2009
Students attend mandatory University Career Services and NAA pre-externship training session.
March 23–April 23, 2009
Externships take place.
Post-externship
Students and Alumni Hosts complete online program evaluation surveys and keep in touch with one another.
