Dr. Lopata Logan Discusses Leaving A Legacy Through One's Career (06.2009)

On June 9, more than 45 alumni from the Greater New York area gathered in Manhattan for a lecture about “generativity”, as discussed by Dr. Regina Lopata Logan (GSESP84, 93), acting director of the Foley Longitudinal Study of Adulthood at SESP and distinguished contributor to the field of learning in adulthood.

Generativity, the midlife adult’s need to leave a legacy or give something back to society, leads to what Lopata Logan refers to as the "encore career". With many alumni and friends embracing this recent midlife career trend, Lopata Logan was able to help participants identify interests that lead to possible encore careers.

Attendees exchanged insights and ideas about employment and volunteer opportunities and met with fellow alumni currently pursuing encore careers. During the networking reception, while chatting over hors d’oeuvres and drinks, alumni reconnected and enjoyed sharing fond NU memories. All event participants received a copy of Marc Freedman’s book, Encore: Finding Work that Matters in the Second Half of Life along with a list of NAA Career resources to help start the encore career exploration process. The event was one of the many NAA Career networking events nationwide.
