It's been 100 years since The Daily Northwestern, one of the most respected college newspapers in the country, ran a series of op-eds and articles that led to the founding of a student-run university marching band. The football team was enjoying an undefeated season and school spirit was at an all-time high. Read the full story in the Fall 2011 Growl, and check out digital shots of the original five articles:

October 10, 1911: "A Band--In Earnest" (The Daily Northwestern)
October 26, 1911: "Twenty-One Men For Band" (The Daily Northwestern)
November 1, 1911: "Band Makes Progress; Financial Aid is Supplied" (The Daily Northwestern)
November 4, 1911: "Band Receives a Boost" (The Daily Northwestern)
November 11, 1911: "Yell Fest Huge Affair; Band Makes Good Music" (The Daily Northwestern)

The NUMBALUMS are working to archive these and other materials with the help of the Northwestern Archives (see a progress report here). If you're interested in helping out with the project, email numbalums-history@alumni.northwestern.edu.
