Did you know that while Asian and Asian-Americans represent 6.9% of all incoming freshmen at the college-level nationwide, the same group accounts for a staggering 19.4% of Northwestern’s freshmen class.* Furthermore, of the 9,000+ Asian and Asian-American Northwestern alumni, 82% graduated after 1990. To address the needs and desires of this important and growing segment of the community, the Northwestern University Asian and Asian-American Alumni club (NU-A5) was chartered.

Through the diligent work of a Steering Committee, NU-A5 gained recognition from the Northwestern Alumni Association (NAA) in October, 2002; just an unprecedented nine months from conception. Since then, NU-A5 has developed a strong membership base and successfully hosted a multitude of events, from which we highlight the following:

  • Career Networking Event (Chicago): featuring a keynote address from Paul Igasaki, former Vice Chair of the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission
  • Ridge Vineyards Wine Tasting (San Francisco): celebrating diversity in the community while sampling award-winning wines from the Santa Cruz Mountains
  • Asian Art Museum Tour and Luncheon (San Francisco): experiencing a guided tour of Asian Art which spans 6,000 years of history followed by an academic lecture by Professor Sarah E. Fraser of Northwestern’s Art History Department
  • Taste of Evanston (Chicago): offering an enticing pan-Asian buffet from Evanston’s ethnic restaurants and an opportunity to meet students and fellow alumni
  • Cookin' the Musical (Chicago): witness a food fight of theatrical proportions. Jackie Chan meets Stomp!

In order to continue the progress of our club, we ask for your support by joining as a member. All members of NU-A5 will have access to the following products and services in the near future, if not today:

  • Networking opportunities, including a mentor/mentee program via Northwestern’s CareerNet
  • Access to employment opportunity listings
  • Volunteer opportunities
  • Reduced fees to NU-A5 events
  • NU-A5 Member Directory

We are encouraged by the success of the aforementioned events and the overwhelming response to a recent survey of our Asian and Asian American alumni base. Looking ahead, we are committed to offering the networking, community, and social benefits that our alumni have requested. To that end, NU-A5 has assembled an exciting slate of events for the 2005 membership year. In addition, NU-A5 welcomes any suggestions for and volunteers at these events. Please contact us with any inquiry, and we look forward to your participation!

Sincerely,

The NU-A5 Board
