Dean David E. Van Zandt, School of Law

Dear Alumni:
The ongoing success of the University and Northwestern Law is due in large part to all of our alumni. You can be proud that your successes—whether they are in the courtrooms, boardrooms, or offices the world over—have reinforced the University’s and the School’s standing.
Recently, Northwestern Law placed 9th overall in U.S. News & World Report, and ranked 1st in The Princeton Review for best career prospects for three of the past four years. The release of “Plan 2008: Preparing Great Leaders for the Changing World” and the launch of our Accelerated JD program further enhances our reputation as an innovative, forward-thinking law school. In addition, the school has maintained its international reputation by staying focused on current, relevant issues within our expanding human rights program, dealing with events and incidents surrounding Darfur, Abu Ghraib, Myanmar, and other occupied territories.
You should take pride in knowing that you, as alumni, help create and maintain the best possible environment in which our students can study and train to be responsible and successful in their careers, and in which our faculty can both teach and assist our students in that endeavor. Your involvement in events, reunions, lectures, or career development activities strengthen the Northwestern alumni community, and ultimately help the Law School stay committed to exploring new territories of law research and scholarship.
You are a part of a distinguished community of professionals. Our alumni have consistently become great leaders throughout the world— from Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens and former Chicago Mayor Harold Washington, to Adlai Stevenson and Dalveer Bhandari, Judge of the Supreme Court of India.
I invite all alumni to continue associations with fellow former classmates, friends, and current students, both through this site and through our own Northwestern Law Alumni site. Northwestern Law also keeps you connected to alumni worldwide through our regional and international Law Alumni Societies.
As dean, I have always said that we are together, not because we all agree, but because we learn from each other. You, as alumni, are still a very important part of that learning process.
David E. Van Zandt,
Dean, Northwestern University School of Law
