A junior pre-med student majoring in biology and English, Jilian Lopez (WCAS10) loves Northwestern and says the combination of rigorous academics and the incredible array of extra-curricular activities is exactly what she was looking for when selecting a college. Her enthusiasm is contagious as she describes the numerous activities she has been involved in and her determination to make the most of her college experience.

Lopez says her passion for volunteerism as well as a long-standing interest in government led to her current role as Director of Community Relations for Associated Student Government (ASG). Lopez first found her way into student government through a flyer promoting elections for Dorm Senators, a position she secured and one which “opened my eyes to a whole new world at Northwestern.”

Lopez’s initial participation and service on the election commission became a catalyst for even greater involvement in student government. “I wanted to find a way to give back to my University and this turned out to be a great vehicle,” Lopez says.

“It’s really inspiring, there are so many late nights, but everybody really loves their job,” Lopez says of her ASG commitment and colleagues. Among the many benefits Lopez says her ASG involvement has provided is improved networking skills and ability to think creatively and strategically to accomplish goals.

An NU Decides Co-Chair, Lopez and her committee helped register more than 1,300 students to vote before last year’s election. The ad-hoc committee also hosted educational forums on major issues facing candidates and voters including the economy and national security.

From studies to student government Lopez says her activities keep her “pretty busy,” but she wouldn’t have it any other way.

“I work very hard for things I believe in and I hope to help others find what they’re passionate about,” Lopez explains. “It really feels like a home here now.”
