Welcome Alumni and Friends!
The Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences (WCAS) — the largest of Northwestern’s schools with more than 4,000 undergraduates, 1,000 graduate students, and 600 full-time faculty members — has continued to strive for excellence in the arts and sciences by attracting the most distinguished faculty and talented students, creating innovative programs, and investing in facilities.
Recent highlights include:
-
The induction of four distinguished faculty as fellows of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences: Dr. Eddie Dekel-Tabak (Economics), Dr. Larry Hedges (Institute for Policy Research), Dr. Robert Orsi (History), and Dr. Michael Whinston (Economics). This is among many honors our faculty has earned recently.
-
Students receiving the honors of Rhodes and Marshall Scholar status including Anna Yermakova (WCAS08, Biology), Rhodes Scholar and Mallory Dwinal (WCAS09) Rhodes Scholar; and Samuel Kleiner (WCAS09) Marshall Scholar. In addition, Northwestern’s freshmen class this past year included a record 249 National Merit Finalists, the third highest number in the nation.
-
The establishment of an innovative curriculum, including:
- The Kaplan Humanities Scholars Program for first year students, now in its second year offering intensive coursework focused on what makes a good society;
- The Brady Scholars Program in Ethics and Civil Life, a three-year interdisciplinary program for 16 undergraduate students that creates a scholarly community addressing issues of ethical leadership; and
- The Kellogg School of Management Certificate Program for Undergraduates, now in its second year offering a four-course sequence in financial economics taught by Kellogg faculty.
Our achievements, along with many others throughout the College, are due in large part to alumni like you. Your connection to Northwestern, and WCAS, is important in upholding our overall standing as a top-tier institution. When you maintain and foster lifelong relationships with other alumni and friends, you create opportunities for future students. I encourage you to stay active as alumni via Northwestern Alumni Association programs, events, reunions, and supporting the annual fund. Also, I invite you to visit the WCAS web site to learn more about the exciting things happening at school.
We look forward to hearing from you!
Sincerely,
Sarah Mangelsdorf
