Dance Marathon 2008 Breaks Fundraising Record

On March 7–9, 2008, Northwestern University students made history in the 34th Annual Dance Marathon. More than 750 students raised an all-time fundraising high of $933,855 for the Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation and the Evanston Community Foundation.

Dance Marathon, one of the nation’s largest student-run fundraisers, collaborates each year with the Northwestern Alumni Association (NAA) to generate awareness and funds for organizations in need. The Dance Marathon Executive Committee and the NAA received a significant response from alumni to participate in seven “AlumNItes” held by NU Alumni Clubs in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and Washington, DC.

The NU Club of Philadelphia raised the most, bringing in $1,300 for Bear Necessities Foundation’s “Small Miracles” program, which supports pediatric cancer patients and their families. More than forty alums gathered at Irish Pub in downtown Philadelphia with Dance Marathon “AlumNIght” co-organizer Cecilia Byrne (WCAS06) for dancing and a silent auction. “Alums had a great time mingling and socializing while bidding at the silent auction, buying raffle tickets, eating appetizers, and reminiscing about NU,” commented Byrne.
Together, the alumni and friends gathered at all “AlumNIte” events raised more than $3,500 for Dance Marathon charities.
