When Zuri Hemphill first arrived at Northwestern University in 2007, she was a 16-year-old first-year student trying to live life away from her parents for the first time.

Now, in her cap and gown with her football player boyfriend by her side, Zuri is graduating from Northwestern with lifelong friends, lots of school spirit and a degree in biomedical engineering. Watch as Zuri heads to Northwestern commencement 2011.

“This is really the first time I have been in such a tumultuous reporting situation,” says Lauren Bohn (GJ10), who has been in Cairo reporting on Egypt’s recent pro-democracy protests since they broke out on January 25. “I’m still trying to figure out […] how to tell a story [while staying focused during the turbulent events],” she explains.

When Jake Herbert (C09) came to Northwestern, he didn’t know how seriously he would be wrestling. “I was only a one-time state champion in high school,” he explains. “Most kids are state champions several times over by the time they get recruited.”

“Impossible is just an opinion,” says Nick Retson (WCAS71, FSM75), explaining what he has learned during two decades of medical mission trips to Central and South America and India. “For a bunch of doctors and nurses from northwest Indiana to go to Bolivia or Guatemala to help people in this capacity…most people would have thought it could never happen.”

Despite coming from different schools and harboring varying skill sets, Maddie Orenstein (SESP10), Chris Lyons (C10), and Morgan McMillan (J10), have all found themselves mentoring high schoolers as part of the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC), the state agency that administers financial aid in Illinois.

Medill alum’s book offers advice and skills to young thinkers

Pushpendra Mehta (IMC05) says that he came to Northwestern “to acquire new-age marketing, public relations, and communications skills,” and now, five years after finishing Medill’s Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) program, he is committed to sharing what he learned with other young thinkers.
