Immerse yourself in the unique cultures that thrive in the Canadian Maritimes: the First Nation people, French Acadians, Highland Scotsmen and Irishmen. Your journey begins in Halifax, Nova Scotia, your gateway to some of the area’s loveliest spots. Continue to St. John for an in-depth look at local culture, flora, fauna and topography, then travel to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island to admire its scenery and pay tribute to Lucy Maud Montgomery’s beloved Anne of Green Gables. Return to Nova Scotia with a visit to Baddeck, and enjoy an exhilarating drive along the Cabot Trail, as well as an informative visit to the Grand-Pré National Park.
ITINERARY
Day 1 - Depart Gateway / Halifax, Nova Scotia
Depart your gateway city for Halifax, Nova Scotia, aboard scheduled jet service. (Provided for Air Program participants only.)
Upon arrival, transfer to the Delta Barrington Hotel. (Transfer provided for Air Program participants only.)
This evening, gather with fellow travelers for a Welcome Reception.
Day 2 - HALIFAX
Excursion: Halifax.
Visit the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, showcasing the city’s shipbuilding and seagoing eras. Visit the Public Gardens and the landmark Citadel. See scenic Peggy’s Cove. Journey along the Lighthouse Trail to the UNESCO World Heritage List site of Lunenburg, the best surviving example of a planned British colonial settlement in North America.
Day 3 - SAINT JOHN, NEW BRUNSWICK
Depart Halifax for Saint John. Travel through Annapolis Valley, the bread basket of Nova Scotia with its orchards, vineyards and breathtaking scenery. Ferry across the Bay of Fundy, one of the world’s most dramatic coastlines. Upon arrival in Saint John, check into the Hilton Saint John.
Local Flavor: Enjoy a cooking demonstration at a local restaurant, followed by dinner.
Day 4 - SAINT JOHN
Excursion: Bay of Fundy.
Visit New Brunswick Museum to learn about the natural and cultural history of the province. Enjoy the scenic beauty of the Bay of Fundy before arriving in the fishing village of Shediac. Climb aboard a boat for dinner and a lesson on catching, cooking and cracking lobster.
Day 5 - CHARLOTTETOWN, PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND
Depart Saint John for Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.
Excursion: Good Clean Fun.
En route, stop at the Olivier Soapery for a hands-on demonstration.
Excursion: Tartan Tunes.
See a show at the College of Piping and Celtic Performing Arts of Canada.
Upon arrival in Charlottetown, check into The Great George.
Day 6 - CHARLOTTETOWN
Excursion: Prince Edward Island.
Visit Cavendish National Park and the Anne of Green Gables House.
Celebrate the precocious redheaded girl in braids, the heroine of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s first book, published in 1908. Journey to Rustico and its scenic harbor dotted with fishing boats.
Day 7 - BADDECK, NOVA SCOTIA
Depart the hotel and ferry over to Nova Scotia. Enjoy a scenic drive on the isolated and craggy Cape Breton Island. Stop by the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site and learn about the young scientist who invented the telephone. Arrive in Baddeck, located on Bras d’Or Lake.
Upon arrival in Baddeck, check into the Auberge Gisele’s Inn.
Day 8 - BADDECK
Excursion: Cabot Trail.
Indulge in a scenic journey along Cabot Trail, which climbs and descends the promontory of Cape Smokey. Enjoy panoramic views. Visit St. Peter’s Church, fishing villages, Neil’s Harbour and Ingonish.
Day 9 - WOLFVILLE, NOVA SCOTIA
Excursion: Grand-Pré National Park.
Discover Nova Scotia’s Acadian heritage and culture at the Grand-Pré National Historic Site. Visit the commemorative center, which showcases a 17th-century Acadian settlement. Learn how the Acadians converted saltwater marshes into productive farmland.
Tonight, gather with fellow traveler’s for a Farewell Dinner.
Day 10
Transfer to the Halifax airport for the return flight(s) to your gateway city. (Provided for Air Program participants only.)
