Journey to exotic Egypt, a land whose history stretches many millennia into the past. In Cairo, view royal mummies in the prestigious Egyptian Museum, shop the vibrant Khan el-Khalili bazaar and discover the religious heritage of Coptic Cairo. Journey to Sakkara, site of an ancient burial ground, and marvel at the Step Pyramid of Zozer. Admire the iconic Pyramids and enigmatic Sphinx of Giza. Fly to Luxor and discover the Luxor and Karnak temple complexes and the seemingly endless Valley of the Kings and Queens before embarking on a cruise of the Nile River. Continue to the Temple of Horus in Edfu, impressive Kom Ombo and the Philae Island temple complex in Aswan. Sail on a felucca boat around Kitchener’s Island, and visit the massive monuments of Abu Simbel.

 

Itinerary

Day 1 
IN TRANSIT

Depart your gateway city for Cairo aboard scheduled jet service.

Day 2 
CAIRO

Upon arrival, transfer* to the Semiramis InterContinental Hotel.

Day 3
CAIRO

Excursion: Egyptian Museum.  See the world’s richest collection of Egyptian artifacts. Marvel at articles from Tutankhamen’s tomb and an exhibit of ancient mummies.  This evening, gather with fellow travelers for a Welcome Reception.

Day 4
CAIRO/GIZA/SAKKARA

Excursion: The Pyramids of Giza and Sakkara. Visit Giza to see the Great Pyramids, the mysterious Sphinx and the Solar Boat Museum. Continue to Sakkara, site of the oldest cemetery in Egypt and the Step Pyramid of Zozer.

Day 5
CAIRO

Excursion: Islamic and Coptic Cairo. Experience Cairo’s Islamic and Coptic heritage. Visit the Royal Mosque of Al Rifai. Explore the Khan el Khalili bazaar. See the Hanging Church and the Ben Ezra Synagogue.

Day 6
CAIRO/LUXOR

Transfer to Cairo’s airport and fly to Luxor. Upon arrival, check in at the Sonesta St. George Hotel.

Excursion: Luxor Museum.  Discover the historic treasures housed in the Luxor Museum.

Excursion: The Temple of Luxor. Tour the Luxor Temple.  Begun in 1414 B.C. by Amenhotep III, additions were added through the centuries until 323 B.C.

Day 7
LUXOR/VALLEY OF THE KINGS

Excursion: Luxor’s West Bank.  Travel to the Valley of the Kings and Queens, where tombs resemble the passage to the underworld. View the temple of Queen Hatshepsut before marveling at the impressive Colossi of Memnon.

Excursion: Chicago Oriental Institute House. Learn about searching, discovering and restoring Luxor’s ancient treasures.

Day 8
KARNAK/CRUISING

Excursion: The Temple of Karnak. Journey to see the amazing Karnak Temple.

Today is spent cruising the Nile River and Esna Lock.

Day 9
EDFU/KOM OMBO

Excursion: The Temple of Horus at Edfu. Visit Edfu and the Temple of Horus. Recognized for its unique roof, the temple was entirely buried until the mid-19th century.

Excursion: Kom Ombo Temple.  See the riverside Temple of Kom Ombo, a double temple shared by the gods Haroeris and Sobek.

Day 10 
ASWAN

Excursion: The Temple of Philae and the Aswan High Dam. Sail to the island temple complex of Philae, dedicated to the goddess Isis. Threatened by the waters of the Aswan High Dam, these impressive structures were moved to higher ground 547 yards from their original site. See the dam itself, then conclude at the famous granite quarries. Learn about Egypt’s ancient stone cutting craft.

Excursion: Felucca Cruise. Drift peacefully along the Nile aboard a traditional felucca.

Day 11
ASWAN/ABU SIMBEL/CAIRO

This morning, transfer to Aswan’s airport for the flight to Abu Simbel.  Excursion: Abu Simbel. Marvel at the Temple of Ramses II, a massive monument commemorating triumphs over the Nubians, Hittites and Syrians. Equally fascinating is the neighboring Temple of Hathor, which honors Queen Nefertari.
Depart for Cairo and check in at the InterContinental City Stars.

Day 12 
CAIRO/IN TRANSIT

Today, transfer to the airport for the return flight to your gateway city.

NOTE: Itinerary sequence and/or scheduled events may change. Many excursions in this program involve an element of walking.

Your Northwestern Host

Alan K. Cubbage

Alan K. Cubbage (GJ78; GJ87) is Vice President for University Relations at Northwestern University, located in Evanston and Chicago, Illinois. He is responsible for the university’s media relations, publications, marketing and communications activities, as well as the University’s top-level Web presence. He serves as the University’s chief public spokesman and is responsible for crisis communications management. He has worked extensively in both traditional and new media.

In addition, he supervises the university’s alumni magazine, Northwestern, and the faculty/staff newspaper, Northwestern News, and the electronic alumni newsletter and the electronic internal newsletter. He also assists in the University’s community relations efforts and was in charge of the celebration of Northwestern’s Sesquicentennial, the 150th anniversary of Northwestern’s founding.

Mr. Cubbage is an adjunct lecturer in Northwestern’s Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences and in Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism, teaching public relations and integrated marketing communications. He also is a speaker at conferences on topics ranging from crisis communications to branding to effective use of electronic communications.

Mr. Cubbage received his undergraduate degree in communications from Grinnell College, Grinnell, Iowa, and holds two master’s degrees, one in journalism and one in advertising, from Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism. He also holds a law degree from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, and is a member of the Illinois Bar.

A life-long Chicago Cubs fan, Mr. Cubbage suffered through a disappointing season this season but has high hopes for next year.
