A land of rich biological diversity and fascinating culture, South Africa contains wonders that exceed the imagination. Experience historic cities, scenic highlights, and exciting game drives during this program that encompasses the best of this storied country. Tour cosmopolitan Cape Town, ascend flat-topped Table Mountain for breathtaking panoramic views, and cruise to historic Robben Island, site of Nelson Mandela’s incarceration. Admire the natural beauty of Cape Point, and observe the African penguin colony at Boulders Beach. Travel to Livingstone and marvel at the majestic Victoria Falls, known as the “smoke that thunders.” In Johannesburg, explore Soweto and the Apartheid Museum. Finally, enjoy a game-viewing safari at world-renowned Thornybush Game Reserve, where you can see the Big Five — lion, elephant, rhinoceros, Cape buffalo and leopard — as well as zebra, giraffe, kudu, and more.

 

Itinerary

Day 1
DEPARTURE

Depart gateway city for Cape Town aboard scheduled jet service.

Day 2
IN TRANSIT

Day 3
CAPE TOWN

Upon arrival, transfer by motorcoach to the Mount Nelson Hotel.

This evening, gather with fellow travelers for a Welcome Reception at the hotel.

Day 4
ROBBEN ISLAND

Excursion: Robben Island. Cruise to the island and tour the former prison where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated, led by a former Robben Island prisoner. Then, see the island’s lime quarry and local village.

Excursion: Cape Town. Your tour of Cape Town will include the city’s highlights.

Educational Focus: History & Culture of South Africa.

Day 5
CAPE TOWN

Optional Excursion: Wine Country. Journey to Franschhoek, the French Corner of the Cape area. Stroll through Stellenbosch, one of South Africa’s most attractive towns. Visit one of the area’s premier wine estates for a tasting and a delicious lunch.

Day 6
CAPE PENINSULA

Excursion: Cape Peninsula National Park, Boulders Beach and Kirstenbosch Gardens. Travel by motorcoach to the Cape Point Nature Reserve. Ascend Cape Point by funicular and marvel at the panoramic views. Travel to Boulders Beach and see the African Penguin colony.

Day 7
LIVINGSTONE

This morning, fly to Livingstone and check into the Royal Livingstone Hotel, overlooking the majestic Victoria Falls. You will have the opportunity to marvel at the “smoke that thunders,” a UNESCO World Heritage site!

Optional Excursion: Sunset Cruise on the Zambezi. Enjoy a catamaran cruise along the scenic river banks.

Day 8
LIVINGSTONE

Optional Excursion: Chobe National Park. Visit the second largest park in Botswana, and see its renowned African elephants. Chobe is home to one of the most diverse concentrations of game and birds found on the African continent.

Day 9
JOHANNESBURG

After a morning at leisure, fly to Johannesburg and check in at the Westcliff Hotel.

Day 10
SOWETO

Excursion: Soweto. Visit the Apartheid Museum and view the internationally acclaimed, award-winning exhibits on life in the townships during the 1970s and '80s. Tour Soweto, where you will see the homes of Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, and Winnie Mandela.

Educational Focus: Contemporary South Africa.

Day 11
THORNYBUSH

This morning, board a flight for Hoedspruit, your gateway to Thornybush Game Reserve.

Excursion: Game Viewing. Set out in an open vehicle on an afternoon game drive. Begin your quest for the Big Five—buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion, and rhinoceros.

Day 12
THORNYBUSH

Excursion: Game Viewing. Be on the lookout for giraffes, blue wildebeest, and waterbuck.

Day 13
THORNYBUSH

Excursion: Game Viewing. Look out for genets, impala, and common duiker, or spot some of the more than 300 bird species.

Day 14
THORNYBUSH

Excursion: Game Viewing. Watch for zebras, eland, and kudu. At midday, take a transfer flight to Johannesburg. Later in the day, board your return flight to your gateway city.

Day 15
GATEWAY CITY

Arrive at your gateway city.

NOTE: Itinerary sequence and/or scheduled events may change. Many excursions in this program involve an element of walking.
