Through an easy-to-use online platform, students and alumni can build meaningful connections with mentors who are passionate about helping others navigate their career paths, pursue new opportunities, or consider graduate school.
Mentors are Northwestern alumni who volunteer to share insights, offer guidance, and help mentees build skills and networks. In turn, the program offers alumni mentors a rewarding way to give back, stay engaged with the Northwestern community, and support fellow Wildcats at every stage of their professional journey.
Mentees can be current Northwestern students or alumni seeking professional guidance.
How it Works
Register and Complete a Profile Students and alumni from all class years, programs, and schools are welcome to participate. To get started, log into the Northwestern Alumni Mentorship Program’s online platform and complete a profile. This takes approximately 15–25 minutes to finish.
Choose Your Role Alumni can get involved as mentors, mentees, or both. Students may participate only as mentees.
Search and Connect Mentees browse the platform to find mentors who align with their career interests and submit a request. Mentors may accept or decline requests and remain anonymous until both sides agree to connect.
Set Expectations Together Once a connection is established, the mentor and mentee collaborate to set goals and communication preferences, including how often and by what method they’ll meet—whether in person or virtually. Mentors may accept up to three mentees at a time; mentees may have up to two mentors.
Use Program Resources Review the program’s resources page to support strong, goal-driven relationships. The Mentorship Agreement Form can help guide your first conversation.
Stay Engaged and Share Feedback Meet regularly and share your experience with the Northwestern Alumni Association to help shape and strengthen the program.

Northwestern Alumni Mentorship Program FAQs
This is a mentee-driven program, meaning mentees search for and request the mentor they’d like to work with. After entering preferences into the platform (industry, career interests, location, etc.), the software generates a list of alumni sorted by how closely the mentor matches with those criteria. Mentees may then send a request, which the mentor can accept or decline based on availability and interest.
A casual conversation is the most common interaction, giving mentors and mentees space to share experiences and ask questions. Other activities include mock interviews (in-person or by phone), job shadowing, résumé or cover letter reviews, or attending a conference or industry presentation together. A full list of suggested activities and discussion topics is available in the resources section.
This program is flexible to fit your schedule. Mentors and mentees align on their own parameters and decide how often to meet at the start of the relationship. Use our Mentorship Agreement Form; after being matched, this document helps guide a conversation about your relationship expectations right away. As a general reference, most mentors and mentees meet once or twice a month.
