Attendee Tips
Explore practical networking suggestions to help you make the most of the Northwestern Connects event.
Prior to the Event
- RSVP to your local Connects event when registration opens.
- Invite your local Northwestern friends and colleagues to join you. Help spread the word by sharing the event webpage or posting a link on your social media channels when registration opens. Let others know you’re attending by posting on social media using the hashtag #NUConnects.
- Take a moment to update your profile in the Our Northwestern alumni directory. Northwestern Connects is a great opportunity to expand your network beyond a single event.
During the Event
- If you’re attending on your own, plan to arrive early. It is often easier to meet people as the room fills than to join established groups. Bring plenty of business cards to exchange with new contacts.
- It is okay to be nervous, but don’t let it hold you back from starting conversations. Introduce yourself to individuals and small groups. And be welcoming by introducing yourself and others to anyone who may join your conversation.
- You don’t need to meet everyone. Instead, spend quality time with those who share similar interests or experiences.
- Have fun! Take photos and share them on social media with event organizers and alumni in other cities who may have attended earlier or may be attending later events.
- And don’t forget—wear purple!
After the Event
- Follow up with the people you met by sending a direct email or reaching out on LinkedIn or other professional platforms.
- Did you promise someone to make an introduction or schedule an informational interview? Keep your word and follow through.
- Continue building relationships by sharing relevant articles, job opportunities, or introductions that may be helpful to your new contacts. Thoughtful follow-up often leads to stronger relationships over time.
- Post your photos on social media and email them to connects@northwestern.edu for inclusion in the post-event photo album.
- Complete the post-event survey sent by the NAA. Your feedback helps shape our future programs and experiences.
